• Martha Chaves

Toronto's Martha Chaves was born and raised in Nicaragua during the tumultuous years of the Sandinista revolution. Not surprisingly Chaves' comedy is nothing short of explosive. She has traveled the world entertaining audiences from every culture and background.
Besides her native Nicaragua, Chaves lived and performed in Rome, Montreal, and in Toronto. She has mastered four languages (five when intoxicated or praying) and as a result, Martha's extraordinary humour incorporates a unique and vast repertoire of multicultural nuances which surprise and delight her audiences as she delivers her lines in either Spanish, Italian, English or French, sometimes simultaneously.

Martha is a favourite in the comedy club circuit. She has performed at "Caroline's" in New York City, "The Laugh Factory" in Los Angeles and is a regular headliner at Yuk Yuk's comedy clubs across Canada and in the Dominican Republic. She has appeared in numerous festivals and humanitarian fund raising events. Her stand-up TV credits include some of the most prestigious shows in the comedy world like her two Galas in the Just For Laughs International Comedy Festival and her own national comedy specials on CBC Television and "Something About Martha" on CTV and on the Comedy Network.

Martha has entertained the Canadian Peacekeeping troops in Alert, Germany, Israel and Egypt. In some countries her passport is source of extensive investigation.

For four consecutive years Martha has been nominated for a "Canadian Comedy Award" in the category "Female Stand-Up of the Year" but the prize has eluded her like it owes her money.

In 2003 she was nominated for a "Latin American Achievement Award" in the category of "More Visible Latin American in the Canadian Media" and she lost. Ironically, she was beat by some dude who is now in the Witness Protection Program.

In her film and TV career, she has worked with huge Hollywood stars like Denzel Washington, Whoopie Goldberg, Wanda Sykes, Chris Rock and with directors of the caliber of Nick Casavettes and the brothers Paul and Chris Weitz of the "American Pie" fame.
